Wedding with a limp
On Friday I went to play tennis and pulled a muscle, I had arrived a little bit late and hadn't had a chance to warm up properly. Then someone played a nasty drop-shot over the net, as I pushed off to go at full speed to get the ball my leg gave way and I could have sworn I heard a popping sound.
It was agony and my first thoughts were of how I was going to be able to cover the wedding that I was booked for on Saturday. I would have felt terrible if I couldn't meet my commitment to the couple.
I wasn't able to walk so I called some of my photographer friends to see if they were available. Seven of us are on an emergency list for just this sort of situation. Thomas Baker, one of the members, was willing to be on standby and luckily he is based in Hitchin, where the wedding was taking place. It was a great relief to have him around just in case.
On Saturday morning my leg was still bad. My girlfriend came along to help me, even though she had just worked a night shift. She's amazing really. Oh and she took a great photograph of the couple too!
Somehow though I was able to cover the wedding without needing to use Thomas. He had lots of work to do in his office so I let him go back to that. I could walk just if I was careful and although I couldn't move around as much as usual I don't think it made much difference to the results.
It was a fantastic wedding too, the couple were really nice to work with. They didn't panic when I told them about my leg the night before. The weather and the venues were great too.
I'll be more careful playing sports the day before a wedding in future though!
